Mukasey’s Surprise

I recently saw a bumper sticker: “I am not afraid of terrorism, and I want you to stop being afraid on my behalf.” Attorney General Michael Mukasey sees plenty of reason to be afraid:

Attorney General Michael Mukasey has been taken aback by the scope and variety of potential terrorism threats facing the United States, he told reporters Friday at an informal meeting in his office.

“I’m surprised by how surprised I am,” said Mukasey, who as a federal judge presided over terrorism-related trials in New York.

HT: Glenn Reynolds, who remarks: “I’m surprised by how surprised he is, too.” Especially in urban areas, we depend on many kinds of complex systems, the disruption of which could impose tremendous economic costs. And threats of life and limb can come in many different forms.
