More on Socialized Medicine

British doctors are deciding not to treat patients if they are “too old or lead unhealthy lives.”

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone…. About one in 10 hospitals already deny some surgery to obese patients and smokers, with restrictions most common in hospitals battling debt.

Bill Quick is right on target:

The nanny state will take care of you – until it decides you are no longer worthy.

If you give control of your medical care to the state, then the state controls the medical care you receive.

I await the headline, “Don’t Treat the Sick, Doctors Say.”

  1. There was an interest comment on this post to the effect that while the Brit state might regard such folks as unfit for treatment, it most certainly wouldn’t regard them as unfit for taxation.

  2. Indeed. In fact, they’re targets for increased taxation, to discourage such unhealthy habits.

Of course, if that worked, the system would really be in trouble, since people would live longer, raising the average age, which in short time would aggravate financial difficulties.
