I think that’s right, and points to one of the fundamental flaws in the assumptions of the church growth movement.
I remember reading (Times Lit. Supp.?), some years ago, that A.J. Ayer had a near death experirence, and recounted the event using much of exact vocabulary as is often used; e.g., white light, tremendous peace, etc. When the reporter asked if he believed in God, as a consequence of the experience, he replied with something along the lines of, “Of course not. I believe in an afterlife, but I still need more evidence to believe in God.”
